This story surrounds a team of soldiers enlisted for a possible suicide mission to end a war. The movie opens with a scene in which Caroline Edh (played by Noomi Rapace) is in a car with her daughter, waiting in a traffic jam, when, suddenly, civilians in front of them are being attacked systematically.
We cut to a few years later where Edh, now a soldier traveling by train. Upon disembarking, she’s taken by a lieutenant to a base. The lieutenant drives Edh through a hostile neighborhood and strands her there. Edh manages to fight her way out, taking the car. Upon arriving at Base, she's taken for a briefing and meets other soldiers recruited for a special mission. It’s explained there’s an ice-covered archipelago where the team must cross and deliver two packages, which could lead to victory. The team will skate across the ice as it is too thin for vehicles. Edh points out that this appears to be a suicide mission. After the briefing, Edh is given a reason to try to make it, the chance to be reunited with her daughter, who has been found in a refugee camp.
The team’s only chance to cross the thin ice is by skating, and if it cracks, they must instantly distribute their weight by lying flat on the ice. Curiosity eventually gets the better of them and they open the packages, which is now suggested could be some sort of biological weapon that could end the war. This leads to a crises of conscience amongst the team.
